I'm back from the West Coast and had a great time in the waves. Want to thank Mike and Shannon for being great hosts. And now the perfect article to return to New Animals. The New Yorker reports that Red Sox statistician Bill James has sighted a lemur living near Fenway Park. Believe it. Read the article here.

FREQUENT DROOL
First off, the Sakamoto / Fennesz show was amazing. Very patient music, but truly rewarding. And now is as good a time as any to introduce one of my new favorite blogs - Root Blog. The blog's mantra is "frequent drool" and the topic is all audio that is dense, droney, delicate, or difficult. A series of posts are dedicated to the music of Morton Feldman with gratuitous mp3s supplied. Another post is dedicated to videos of mythical 90s hardcore. And the blog is not without a sense of humor, posting Ice Cube videos and the re-edit of the Shining as a light summer comedy. Bookmark this blog.

GUILTY PLEASURE
This album probably doesn't need any more endorsements, but Beck's new Modern Guilt is fantastic. 30 compact minutes of fuzzy, rocking psyche tunes. Beck is either deeply engrossing and heartfelt as in Sea Change or eclectic and corny as hell as in Midnight Vultures. In this album, he strikes a terrific synthesis of both his introspective folkie and his wild rocker. Catchy choruses and rich, rich production. I can't wait to listen to these tunes, cruising down the road in California, on the way to the beach.

AFRO-PUNK WEEKEND
It's gonna be a wild weekend. This Saturday the Dirtbombs headline the Afro-Punk fest in Fort Greene Park. Possibly the coolest living band. Mick Collins of the legendary Gories and two drummers? Yes, two drummers.
