For the first time in history scientists have descended 650ft into the magma chamber of a volcano.
These incredible images show one explorer gently lowering himself into the heart of the dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano in Iceland.
Known as a 'sleeping volcano' because it could come back to life at any time, Thrihnukagigur is credited with helping to create the Atlantic island we call Iceland when it last erupted 3,000 years ago.

WIN FACTORY
The Audubon Research Center for Research of Endangered Species in New Orleans successfully produced two male African black-footed kittens — an endangered species of which only 40 remain — using frozen embryos created in 2005 from the in vitrofertilization of an egg with sperm frozen in 2003.
The efficacy of the technique may offer hope for the survival of other threatened species through long-term cell storage.

TO DUST
"Two sculptures are hung from a mechanism that gently grinds them into each other. The sculptures will slide against one another for many years creating new unimagined form."

CUEVA DE LOS CRISTALES
"...the crystals measured up to 12 meters long (over 36 feet) with a single crystal weighing approximately 55 tons....Millions of years ago, volcanic activity filled the mountain with anhydrite, a waterless form of gypsum. As magma eventually cooled, the anhydrite began dissolving, enriching cave waters and allowing gigantic crystals to form. Amazingly enough, the size of the crystals has no limit and given enough time will grow to even larger proportions."

FROM FLATLAND TO THE 4TH DIMENSION
From Edwin Abbott Abbott to Carl Sagan. I just read Flatland again after reading Sagan's The Varieties of Scientific Experience: A Personal View of the Search for God.
I love these dudes.
