WIN FACTORY

The Audubon Research Center for Research of Endangered Species in New Orleans successfully produced two male African black-footed kittens — an endangered species of which only 40 remain — using frozen embryos created in 2005 from the in vitrofertilization of an egg with sperm frozen in 2003.
The efficacy of the technique may offer hope for the survival of other threatened species through long-term cell storage.

CAMP ONE

CAMP ONE, MOUNT EVEREST, TIBET-05-06-05-
Anne Parmenter looks over her tentsite in Camp One, at 7,100 meters on the North Col of Mt. Everest Friday after waking from her first night at the camp. She and most other members of the Connecticut Everest Expedition spent a night on the col camp then returned to Advanced Basecamp. They will make several more trips to Camp One and perhaps one to Camp Two to acclimitize before heading for the summit of Everest in the last two weeks of May.

Originally thought to be a single species, called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, the fungus is actually four distinct species—all of which can "mind control" ants—scientists announced Wednesday."
